Drug Use Harm Reduction

Harm reduction acknowledges that drug use occurs regardless of legal frameworks, and that practical safety information saves lives. These principles apply regardless of substance.

8 Harm Reduction Principles

01

Test Before You Use

Always use a reagent test kit (Marquis, Mecke, Folin) to verify substance identity. Fentanyl test strips should be used for any unknown powder or pressed pill. Never assume purity based on appearance, smell, or taste. A small test is far cheaper than a life.

02

Start Low, Go Slow

Begin with a fraction of your intended dose, especially with new vendors, new batches, or any substance you haven't used recently. Allow adequate time between doses. Potency varies enormously between sources and even within the same batch.

03

Never Use Alone

Have a trusted person present, or use the Never Use Alone hotline (1-800-484-3731) in North America. In the event of overdose, someone needs to be able to call emergency services immediately. Being alone multiplies the risk of a fatal outcome.

04

Keep Naloxone Accessible

Naloxone (Narcan) reverses opioid overdose quickly and safely. Keep it nearby whenever opioids are involved — including with stimulants due to fentanyl contamination risk. It's available free at many pharmacies and harm reduction centers. Learn how to use it before you need it.

05

Avoid Mixing Substances

Polydrug use dramatically increases overdose risk. Never combine opioids with benzodiazepines, alcohol, or other CNS depressants. The combination suppresses breathing more than either substance alone. Stimulants combined with opioids mask warning signs. Know what you're taking.

06

Know Overdose Signs

Opioids: blue lips, unresponsive, slow or stopped breathing, gurgling sounds. Stimulants: chest pain, extreme agitation, seizures, overheating. Psychedelics: extreme anxiety, dissociation, dangerous behavior. If in doubt, call emergency services immediately.

07

Set & Setting Matter

Your mental state and physical environment significantly affect outcomes, especially with psychedelics and MDMA. Avoid high-risk substances when stressed, isolated, fatigued, or in unstable environments. A positive mindset and safe space reduce adverse reactions significantly.

08

Seek Support Without Judgment

Resources like DanceSafe, The Loop, and local harm reduction services provide free testing, information, and support without legal consequences in most jurisdictions. Asking for help is strength, not weakness. These services exist for exactly this purpose.

How to Test Substances

Reagent testing involves applying a small drop of liquid reagent to a tiny sample of the substance. The resulting color change indicates what compounds are (or aren't) present. Different reagents detect different substances.

Marquis Reagent

Reacts to MDMA (purple/black), amphetamines (orange/brown), opioids (orange). One of the most widely used test reagents.

Mecke Reagent

Strong indicator for MDMA (blue/black), DXM (yellow/green), opioids. Best used alongside Marquis for cross-confirmation.

Folin Reagent

Specifically detects primary amines. Useful for identifying certain psychedelics and research chemicals. Negative result rules out primary amines.

Fentanyl Test Strips

Detects fentanyl and many analogues in a dissolved sample. A positive result is an immediate stop signal — do not use the substance.

Simon's Reagent

Differentiates between MDMA and MDA — MDMA turns blue/black, MDA does not react. Use to confirm secondary amines.

Mandelin Reagent

Indicates ketamine (orange/brown), amphetamines (green), opioids (red/brown). Useful complement to Marquis and Mecke.

Important: Reagent tests are not definitive — they cannot detect all adulterants and cannot quantify dosage. Combine multiple tests and use fentanyl test strips for every unknown substance. A negative fentanyl test does not mean the substance is safe.
